Area Guide - Casares Costa . . .

On the Costa del Sol, within Andalusia, and close to Estepona, stands a unique Spanish village; Casares, nestled in the hillside with its white-painted houses interlaced with tiny streets. Perched on top of a cliff, Casares’ dramatic location makes exceptional photo opportunities, but was primarily chosen as the ultimate defence mechanism in ancient times. While easily noticeable from faraway, a panoramic view of some 40 square kilometres can be enjoyed from the village, while its rear pushes up against solid mountainside.

Spectacular, rural and impressively daring in its architectural makeup, Casares attracts plenty of tourists all year round. It is one of the few locations on the Costa del Sol where visitors are unlikely to even notice the weather. The dramatically climbing streets, the winding roads and the cobbled squares draw the eye, while the authentic Spanish lifestyle is culturally pure, and untouched.

Casares has been inhabited for thousands of years by a myriad of civilisations, each leaving its mark. Besides walking along the narrow, cobbled streets with their Moorish design, one should not miss the opportunity to see the Arab Castle at the top of the hill where the views are spectacular. Along the way, walk through the town square and get a taste of real Spain where women go about their business, cloaked in black shawls and men pass the time away socializing.

The tiny village shops, full of local products, hide around every corner with a scattering of small bars and cafes thrown in. Local pottery and leatherwork are very good buys. Casares has its own little museum with artefacts dating from the Roman times. The whole town is a photographer's paradise.

In Roman times the town was of such importance that it had its own mint and Roman baths. Numerous Roman ruins lie close by, including part of an aqueduct. The local festivals “fiestas” take place in the first two weeks of August and the fair “Feria del Santo Cristo” takes place in September and that is when the village comes alive.

Coming down from the village to the coastline you will find Casares Costa only a few kilometres from the Mediterranean boundary and beach. The beach has a few showers and lifeguard points, with the popular Chiringuito called Sal at the east end, which has a double headland with the 16th-century square watchtower, Torre de la Sal. The famous luxury and spa hotel Finca Cortesin which is located close to the coast also has a private beach club next to Torre de la Sal. The beach in the cove to the west of the old watch tower is called the “Dog beach” which is one of the few beaches in Andalusia where dogs are permitted.
